McCann will likely play in the midfield, but technical director Carlos Bocanegra said McCann has “the capacity to play in defense as well.” Roster versatility is very important when it comes to late game substitutions, and it’s nice to be able to move players around on the field.
McCann advanced through the youth system at Burnley, and debuted for the senior team in 2005. He made 238 appearances for Burnley until 2013 when he signed for Wigan Athletic. McCann appeared in 66 games for Wigan over the past three years before signing with Atlanta today. It is likely he will go out on loan until the season begins in 2017.
McCann is now the fifth player on the Atlanta roster. If any of the Bruno Soriano or Andres Guardado reports are true then Atlanta appears to be focused on signing a solid midfield core. Bocanegra and team President Darren Eales have promised to put a competitive team together, and midfield depth is the first step towards that.
It will be interesting to see how the roster continues to take shape over the summer, and I believe I’m not alone in thinking the 2017 season can’t get here soon enough.
