Last night the Dream were able to pull off an excellent 101-97 overtime win over the visiting Chicago Sky. It was an intense & very tight game for both teams as they battled for the win. Atlanta had 4 high-scoring players last night, Angel McCoughtry with 22 points & 5 rebounds, Elizabeth Williams with 20 points & 9 rebounds, Tiffany Hayes with 14 points & 5 rebounds, & Layshia Clarendon with 19 points & 5 rebounds. Chicago came with a plan to defeat the Dream & not back down to the competition. The Sky were able to execute off of Atlanta’s careless mistakes & turnovers. Chicago had 3 top scoring players that gave Atlanta a lot of trouble the entire night, Elena Delle Donne with 26 points & 6 rebounds, Courtney Vandersloot with 16 points & 3 rebounds, & Tamera Young with 15 points & 4 rebounds.
Every time Atlanta would get a good shot off, Chicago responded back with one as well. Both teams came to compete & better their records for the league. Atlanta shot 45.3% from the field while Chicago shot just 45.1%. Atlanta’s bench also contributed by adding to the scoring & rebounding stat. Down to the 4th quarter the energy rose, adrenaline running high, whistles being blown on both ends, techs were given, bodies were hitting the floor from left & right. The determination from both teams to get the win lead the end of the 4th quarter tied 89-89, which lead to 5:00 minute overtime battle this would either make or break Atlanta. With 3:58 left in overtime Cappie Pondexter made a 3-pointer giving Chicago a 92-91 lead. On the next possession after a miss from the Dream, Delle Donne hit another 3-pointer for the Sky which put the score at 95-91. From there Atlanta went to the line 3 times & made 4 of 6 free throws which helped them stay in the game with Chicago. Elizabeth Williams tied the game 97-97 with a tremendous putback layup. With just 3 seconds left in OT Angel McCoughtry made two key free throws to close out the game with the final score 101-97. Atlanta now 8-3 will take on the 5-7 Washington Mystics today at 7:00 pm EST at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.
